Warren County was formed by the Illinois General Assembly on January 13, 1825. The land was in the Military Tract, set aside as bounty land in payment for service for veterans of the War of 1812. They obtained the land using their military land warrants. Veterans also sold their rights to others, sometimes relatives or friends, sometimes total strangers. Check out Bureau of Land Management for records of original land purchases. The Illinois Legislature laid out Warren County during the 1825 session. It was taken from Pike County. In 1830 a separate county government was established. Before that it was under Peoria County. Warren County was named for General Joseph Warren who was killed in the Battle of Bunker Hill leading up to the Revolutionary War. The Black Hawk War in 1832 slowed the growth of the county as it was in the center of the disputed territory. Following the war the county began to grow and prosper.

We attempted to recapture the original pages of the Warren County ILGenWeb site but were unable to do so. Some articles from EARLY DAYS IN GREENBUSH, the 1905 work by Wm. L. Snapp which was on the site thanks to Jeff Simmons of Galesburg, were recovered and can be found on this site but most were lost. The entire book may be found online in several places. You may download the entire book free here.
